Promotion Rules & Spend Boundaries
Clip the for U coupon in your app or use reward points before the feast. Food items count toward your total, but gift cards, beer, and wine do not count. Limit one free or deal bird per home while supplies last.
Eligible Purchases
Bakery, dairy, produce, meats, frozen goods, and holiday groceries count toward required totals.
Excluded From Spend Total
Gift cards, fluid dairy milk (where restricted), alcohol, tobacco, prescriptions, and sales tax are excluded.
What Can You Get for Free?
Use your for U points or digital coupon for a free turkey up to 16 pounds. You only pay for the weight over the 16-pound limit. Fresh and organic birds do not qualify.
You can choose a bone-in turkey breast up to 7 pounds instead of a whole bird. Smoked ham portions and plant-based roasts are also available in most stores. Check the for U app for all options.
If free turkeys sell out, desk staff can give a raincheck slip. You can also use points for hams or turkey breasts. Ask a store clerk if freezers are bare.
⚠️ Holiday Inventory & Thawing Window Notice
Frozen turkeys require approximately 24 hours of refrigerator thawing for every five pounds of meat. Pick up your holiday bird at least four days before Thanksgiving to allow safe thawing. Grocery freezers empty quickly during Thanksgiving week, so shop early.
What Purchases Do Not Count?
Gift cards do not count toward your spend total. This includes store gift cards and cards for other stores. Lottery tickets, money orders, and stamps do not count.
Pharmacy meds and co-pays do not count by federal rules. Beer, wine, and liquor do not count by state law. Tobacco and vape items do not count toward your total.
Fluid cow milk does not earn reward spend in states with milk price laws. Bottle return deposits, shopping bag fees, and sales tax are also excluded.
Store digital coupons lower your register total. Store discounts can drop your spend below the goal. Paper maker coupons act like cash and do not lower your spend.
📍 Need Food Assistance Without Store Spend?

Does Every Store Take Part?
Holiday rewards run at most stores in November. Check your for U mobile app before you shop. Local store flyers show your area deal.
Suburban stores have large freezers with 14 to 22 pound turkeys. Small city stores have less cold space. City shops often sell more turkey breasts and deli trays.
Weekly ad flyers show local holiday sales. Most stores post new sales on Sunday or Wednesday. Check your local zip code online to view the current ad.
📍 Regional Store Verification
Supermarket promotions can vary by operating division and franchise location. Always confirm holiday terms in your neighborhood weekly flyer before shopping. Enter your local postal code on the official store website to view current meat specials.
Shopper Savings Strategies for Safeway
Follow these practical shopping tips to maximize your savings on Thanksgiving dinner.
Stack maker coupons with store deals
Bring paper maker coupons for foods like stuffing mix and canned corn. Maker coupons save cash on food. They do not lower your qualifying spend total.
Earn fuel rewards on holiday food
Many stores offer bonus gas points in November. You can earn fuel points on your grocery trips. These gas points save cash at the pump while you shop.
Clip digital coupons before checking out
Clip the digital coupon in your store app before you get in line. Cashiers cannot add digital coupons at the checkout lane. Always check your app account before you pay.
Pick up your bird 4 days before Thanksgiving
A frozen turkey needs one full day in the fridge for every 5 pounds of meat. Pick up your bird by Monday before Thanksgiving. This gives the bird time to thaw safely.
💡 Deal Stacking Strategy
Combine manufacturer paper coupons with weekly grocery store discounts to reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Manufacturer coupons count toward your qualifying grocery spend total at most supermarkets. Review our holiday grocery budget tips for more savings tactics.
